Add a Splash—Or Two Or Three!

Update: watch a video about these cymbal mounts.

Add a Splash or Two

A little extra cymbal color is fun. Splash cymbals are one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get that fun. Commonly used in Dixieland, fusion, reggae, pop, and progressive rock music, splash cymbals add texture and color to your beats and fills.

Add a Splash or Two

There are several ways to attach one splash or even multiple splashes to your kit. The easiest is to use an attachable cymbal arm.

Gibraltar has cymbal arms in several different lengths and with different styles of clamps and tilters. They adjust to fit most any size hardware, and they can be angled in many directions. Clamping the cymbal arm to a tom post is a popular way to put the splash up front and in easy reach.

But what other options do you have? There are many. You can mount your splash atop another cymbal, using a Gibraltar cymbal stacker.

You can mount several splashes this way, too, and the overall look (figure 5.5) is cool.

Cymbal stackers simply thread on to the bottom cymbal stand, either in place of the wing nut or on top of the wing nut. Gibraltar makes cymbal stackers in 4″ and 6″ lengths.

If you want a more architectural approach, consider using boom cymbal stands augmented with Deluxe cymbal tilters with swivel.

Deluxe cymbal tilters with swivel are very versatile. They tilt, of course. The tilter moves in the same fashion as your hand waving bye-bye. But the ‘swivel’ part means they also rotate on their post, much like the rotation of your wrist. And they can be rotated around the axis of the rod they are attached to. Last but not least, they can also be attached to the end of a rod. Here’s a photo of two deluxe swivel tilters added to a boom cymbal stand, one on the end and one mid-boom.

By twisting the positions of the swivel tilters, and repositioning the placement and angle of the cymbal boom arm, the arrangement is made different again.

You can make your multiple-splash mounting even more visual, and more practical. The same deluxe swivel tilters allow you to arrange the cymbals on a tilt or angle, in any direction you like. Here are three splashes on a boom arm cymbal stand. There’s a splash on a swivel tilter attached to the butt end of the cymbal boom, another splash mounted on a swivel tilter mounted in the middle of the boom, and the third splash is mounted on the tilter of the boom arm.

These are a few of many ways to add some splash to your kit. Have fun using your own imagination to do it your way. With Gibraltar, you’ve got Nothing But Options.
